Application Instructions

Please note that the foundation has changed its application procedures as follows:

LETTER OF INQUIRY

Applicants should submit a letter-of-inquiry (LOI) form and attachments by the deadline for the relevant program area. If the inquiry is one that will be considered further, the foundation will request more information. Please do not submit additional information unless so requested.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Letter-of-inquiry forms (and attachments) should be sent as attachments to an email to loi@columbia.org by the appropriate application deadline. If you have any questions, or do not receive an email confirming receipt of your LOI within a week following the application deadline, contact Alex Hoskyns-Abrahall at alex@columbia.org.

If you do not have internet access, or are unable to send an LOI via email, please contact the foundation. For all requests for continued support, please include as an attachment to the LOI an update on the program currently funded by Columbia Foundation and a rationale for continued support.

CONTACT WITH FOUNDATION STAFF

The Columbia Foundation welcomes emails from applicants to clarify the foundation's program guidelines and application procedures. Please contact Alex Hoskyns-Abrahall, alex@columbia.org, with all LOI-related questions. Please note that meetings to discuss LOIs are initiated and scheduled by foundation staff. If your organization is a current Columbia grantee, please contact Carolyn Koo, carolyn@columbia.org, for questions regarding your grant.

SCREENING PROCEDURES

Columbia Foundation receives many more applications than it can fund each year. Although many applications merit support and fall within guidelines, the foundation is able to fund less than one-in-ten applications in each area each year. A three-stage review process follows each program application deadline: (1) review of LOIs by staff and consultants; (2) review and discussion by foundation trustees, program committees, and community advisors; and (3) final staff recommendations to the board of directors for decisions approximately four to six months after the program-area deadline.
